Exploring Neidan Chinese Internal Alchemy

Neidan, also known as “inner elixir,” is a Chinese internal alchemy that emerged during the Tang and Song dynasties. It is a complex system of meditation, breathing techniques, visualization, and spiritual practices aimed at achieving immortality or enlightenment.

Neidan focuses on internal transformation and uses alchemical language metaphorically to describe processes within the body and spirit. When practitioners talk about substances like “lead” and “mercury,” they are actually referring to essential energies within the body, not physical materials.

The Three Treasures (San Bao):

  • Jing (essence): The most basic form of energy in the body
  • Qi (vital energy): The life force that flows through everything
  • Shen (spirit): The most refined form of energy, connected to consciousness and spiritual awareness

The “inner cauldron” or dantian, located in the lower abdomen, serves as the center for energy transformation and spiritual development.

The Microcosmic Orbit describes specific pathways through which energy circulates in the body during practice.
