:wrench: Understanding Your Discourse Chat Options

Hereโ€™s an explanation of the chat settings available on your forum:

:mobile_phone: Accessing Chat Settings

  1. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Preferences from the dropdown menu.
  3. Navigate to the Chat tab.
  4. Scroll through the available options.

:mobile_phone: Basic Chat Controls

  • Enable chat
    Toggle to turn the entire chat functionality on or off for your account.

  • Only send chat push notifications
    When enabled, youโ€™ll only get push notifications for chat messages, not for regular forum activities.

  • Block all non-chat push notifications
    Prevents any forum notifications (posts, likes, etc.) from being sent as push notifications.

:bell: Notification Management

  • Ignore channel-wide mentions
    When enabled, you wonโ€™t be notified if someone uses @here or @all in a channel.

  • Desktop chat notification sound
    Toggle to enable/disable the sound alert when new chat messages arrive.

  • Email Notifications
    The forum will email you about chat messages if youโ€™ve been offline for 15+ minutes.

  • Show activity indicator in header
    Displays when other users are active/typing in chat channels.

  • Show separate sidebar modes for forum and chat
    Maintains different sidebar configurations when switching between forum and chat.

:keyboard: Message Sending Options

  • Send by Enter
    Pressing Enter sends your message immediately.
    (Use Shift+Enter for a new line.)

  • Send by โŒ˜ + Enter
    Messages send only when you press Command+Enter.
    (Regular Enter key creates a new line.)
